I need help with getting 5.1

A buddy of mine has the Onkyo TXDS-575 and cannot get 5.1. He has a digital out (coax) running from the DVD to receiver. However it is only a standard composite cable, not an actual "digital coax". I believe this should make no difference. On the DVD player setup, it is saying 6CH. The movie is 5.1 and the receiver is digital. Does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong? Thanks in advance.
