It's a faeture useful for latenight HT use whn others in the house are sleeping, or for apartment or condo dwellers when you have to avoid annoying neighbors with intrusive sound levels during the peaks. It compresses the dynamic range of the audio, making the loud passages quieter and the quiet passages louder, so that there is a more uniform loudness throughout. This also allows you to more easily hear intelligable center channel dialog at lower volumes when there are explosions and other effects present in the R and L main speakers
