I have digital and analog connections between my Sony DVD and pre/pro at all time, and sometimes also record directly from the second set of analog/composite video outs of the DVD to a VHS VCR. I use one S-video connection and one additional composite DVD out. No problems. I've done this with two different DVD players (both Sony).
