Voice overs normally comes through the center speaker. You may have a problem with the DVD player or the receiver. I agree that it plays audio cd's as well but the dvd is coded differently.

Solution suggested:

* Try another DVD player
* Check whether your receiver has the facility of bypassing the surround mode and going on stereo. This will give some indication of where the fault lies
* Reciever has a problem
