The only way that you may get an improvement using the optical cable is if the receiver converts the analog signal from the CD in to digital, again, and back to analog. It is a toss-up. Look around, I heard you can find cheaper optical cables than $40.
I don't know what the newer DVD players would have over the current ones. There are some without the lip sink problems. I think the next generation may have progressive scan out but your TV must have the line doubling capability.
