If the component inputs are progressive...

the literature will state this. Look for at least two progressive component inputs (one for DVD and one for an HDTV receiver).

***Can anyone point an ignoramous like me to a good paper or website that explains all this (progressive scan, line doubling, HDTV, etc.)?***

I recall some easy to understand explanations there.

Also, you only seem to looking at direct view sets only. I recommend that you consider the larger 16x9 rear projection sets also. These sets have more visual impact than smaller direct view sets. The Toshiba 40H80 is quite a good set which can be found for $18-1900. No set is perfect, but once adjusted (like most sets, it's terrible out of the box), the Toshiba's picture is extremely close to as good as you're going to find.
