There are a couple of possibilities.

I'm not familiar with your DVD player. Does it have a DD or DTS decoder? If so, you might need to configure the decoder as appropriate for your system, and tell the player that it should use the internal decoder. Of course if your player doesn't have an internal decoder, the 5.1 input on your receiver won't do you much good.

Also, are you sure you've selected the 5.1 input on your receiver?

Those are the ones that come to mind.
