The s/VHS recording will be much better than VHS, even if you view the s/VHS recorded tape in composite, but to enjoy the full benefit of s/VHS is to retain the s/VHS all the way to the monitor or TV, that of course would require one with s/VHS capability.
Unless the VCR specifically states, that s/video can be played on the standard VHS machine, it will not work. BTW, some machines do play the tape, but it is not the same as a true s/VHS machine, and also you cannot record s/VHS on those machines.
Most Beta SP/decks do provide s/video inputs. If you are going to broadcast, why not go directly to Beta SP with your IMOVIE?
You won't like what Mini DV will do to your video, they cannot be played in anything but a Mini DV player. I think your s/VHS deck idea is a good one. Or if you are producing, look around for a used Beta s/p recorder.--db
