Subwoofer Placement

I'm trying to help my son hook up a home theater system and I have a question relative to the placement of the subwoofer. I realize that the subwoofer is not a directional transducer but can it be positioned behind the listening position as opposed to in front. He has a small child and would like to put it behind the couch so that the child doesn't climb on it.Will the sound be compromised by this placement. Any help would be appreciated.
