Hi Dave,You are absolutely right in that the X30 provides the additional signal gain. You do not need to use the additional amp inline (Radio Shack SA-155).
I have a Denon 4800 (200mv signal output) that had to have the LFE output amplified before feeding the Carvin amp. When I subsequently purchased the X30 and dropped it into the signal path - I did not remove the SA-155.
There are times that you might want to use the SA-155 depending on your environment. If I were to introduce more weight into our home theater setup (4x12 platform, two loveseats, four adults) - I would likely need to boost the signal as we now have both the X30 and the Carvin amplifer volume set to maximum.
Another benefit is that the SA-155 allows me to boost and enhance the BK output when listening to music. With the X30 and Carvin volume set to max, I need to adjust the Denon volume fairly loud to produce any noticeable BK vibration from the minimal bass at 80Hz and below typically found in CD music . With the SA-155, I can increase the output such that lower music volume settings can produce significant BK response.
It's all personal preference - but you're right - the SA-155 is not a required component.
