A transponder receives an IF signal for a single channel (sometimes 2 channels in Ku-band systems) from the satellites receiver, shifts its frequency, and amplifies it for retransmission to earth.When setting up, your digital reciever should auto-tune to the strongest transponder, if you are not seeing any signal, then alignment may not be correct, or there is an object, tree, or something in the signal path. Direct TV provides preview channels open all the time, even without access card authorization, these are great to tune in with, however a card must be inserted in the slot.
