... you certainly would be able to watch DVDs on this setup. Obviously, you would not get surround sound from the tv speakers, but IMO this is by no means necessary in order to get a decent movie watching experience at home.
If you have the possibility of using an existing 2-channel system for stereo sound you can most likely improve the sound as compared to the tv speakers. Still no surround, and if you or other members of the audience is not seated exactly between the 2 speakers, you may miss the center channel (for locating dialogue correctly etc.)Hope this helps :)
