I also own the 7700, although I have had mine for about 2 years now, so it is quite broken in and I have learned much about its sonics. I too notice that the CD playback is overly bright. I personally can't handle it as a CDP and strictly use it as a DVDP. I run the 7700 to my processor via an Illuminati D-60. I don't notice movie playback as being bright. This may have something to do with the fact that the 7700 uses dual pickups--one for CD and one for DVD. Of course, I'm no EE, so I'm simply speculating.
