Understanding Bass Management

216.81.255.192

Hi,

I understand the basics of bass management. What I am looking for here help in understanding how Marantz has implemented theirs. I called the factory, they were not helpful. I have a SR19EX. As you may know it allows you to set sub=on, plus a selection of THX or both. Both meaning it will send low freq to both the large front L&R and to the sub, sub=no meaning all low freq go to the front, assuming you have front L&R set to large. What I have not been able to find out is the following:
1) Is the x-over freq at 80Hz or 100Hz. Since it has the THX stamp of approval, doesn't THX demand it is set at 100Hz ?
2) If the actual ouput to the sub with movies is grossly extended, for example +12db room shaking explosive basss for movies, does this gross extension affect the music performance of the sub, or is all this dependant on the source material, i.e. movie DVD verses CD music?

This is also where these questions are leading to:
I am adding a Jolida tube amp to my system because I have expanded the rear surround to support 6.1 offered by the SR19EX. I will use the internal Marantz amps to support the center/side/rear. The Jolida will be driving the front L&R. I have paid Jolida to install the factory pair of sub ouputs. This will allow me to move my sub connection from the Marantz to the Jolida and utilize the x-over in my M&K rather than the fixed x-over in the Marantz. I believe I will benefit greatly with music this way, but question the movie side. If I set the software in the Marantz to sub=no and L&R=large, will the Marantz send the movie related room shaking stuff out to the front L&R, (i.e. via the Jolida sub outs to the M&K)? Or is there something other than simple x-over freq coming out of the Marantz sub ouput I will loose in the configuration.

Thanks, in adavance, for taking the time to read all this, and any suggestions you may have.

Jim
