Pro logic goes back into the late 80's although the further back you go the fewer there are in movies. In music releases DD is only a recent phenomenon and not many have pro logic.I'm guessing the unhappy sound is due to the way the processor works. I've learned the hard way with some absolutely unlistenable processors that they vary in sound quality enormously and those which might sound spectacular on movies are crap on music. The latest batch are leaps & bounds ahead of those of merely a few years ago.
I'm not suggesting DD is the answer to nice sound as in some cases it is not. However have a listen to pro logic on some of the later processors and you might see what I'm talking about. Meridian have put out some good units and there are a lot of used ones around to try. Those without DD often sell for 10% of their original price.
