It general, DD can be downmixed to PCM on the digital output by the DVD players themselves (as you mentioned), but DTS can not. Your only solution is hope that the DTS DVD in question also has a PCM output option in it's menu (i.e. The Eagle's "Hell Freezes Over" DTS DVD also has a PCM track).
