Re: THX Ultra and Select

Generally, to many people, the THX label means that the highest standards were used.

THX Select certification is for components that are certified to perform in a mid-sized or smaller home theater environment (under 3000 cubic feet).

THX Ultra certification is the equivalent to the original, plain THX certification and given to products that meet the standards for larger rooms.

Theoretically, if you have a home theater environment that is 3,000 cubic feet or less, the THX Select receivers and speakers should deliver about the same presentation standards as the higher-end THX Ultra components.

My personal experience is limited. I have a Denon 5800 which is THX Ultra certified with Def Tech speakers. My friend bought a less expenive receiver that was THX Select certified. He is very happy with his system. But my system sounds much better. There are several reasons (power, speakers, etc.). But generally, I think equipment that is THX Ultra certified is better. It tends to be higher end equipment with more power, features and quality.

A good receiver will last many years. So I wanted a THX Ultra certified receiver. Not because of the THX but because I wanted a high quality product. I thought the Ultra label was an indication of a higher quality receiver.
