what to look for when purchasing pre/pro

Hi,
I've seen several articles about purchasing amp or dd receivers.
But did not find such articles about what to look for when purchasing pre/pro. I'd appreciate buying guide for used pre/pro.
I am considering Denon AVP8000 with DTS upgrade mainly because I liked the sound, and the price is within my budget. One thing, though, is it looks very old.
