I suggest you educate yourself a little more before jumping in. Purchase a few HT mags from the newsagent and come to terms with all the features on offer. Learn to read between the lines of reviews and when you have narrowed down your selection do a search using "Google" on the net as well as a search on this board. Once educated you can then think about shopping in stores or on the net (maybe used - better value if you choose carefully).I quite like "The Perfect Vision" - they have a net site at http://www.theperfectvision.com/
but take the time and trouble to do proper research.
Yes you can use your present Bose speakers but opinion here is that there are better systems around than Bose. However you could opt to trade in your two speakers for a Bose HT system but will then be stuck with it as, from what I understand, you cannot splice components in and out as we idiots around here like to do. What I am talking about here is a "component" system of separates where components from various manufacturers are linked together. This allows more flexibilty in choice and theoretically nit picks out the best bits that each manufacturer has on offer.
Bottom line is that you are unlikely to get the best value in your budget range with separates but do think ahead. Once you have been bitten by the audio-video bug (and posting here is fatal to being infected) you are unlikely to stay content with the one system so will want to upgrade later on. Separates makes this easier than some systems do. But there are systems of separates around but I'm sorry, I do not know enough about any of them to make a recommendation.
A final warning. Beware of sales talk and walk away from any dealer who rubbishes one brand over another. Remember they are there to make a sale and are unlikely to speak well of anything they do not carry. The ideal situation is to find a dealer stocking a couple of the brands you are interested in. But even then be careful as their business angle is to push the item that gives them the biggest mark up. Please do not think I'm trying to rubbish all dealers. Many are very knowlegable and can be helpful but their aim is to sell rather than educate so this must always be born in mind. The best salesman sell themselves so the customer feels he/she has made a new friend and cannot offend by not buying!
Hope this helps.
John
