S-Video from computer DVD to TV

I'm confused about S-Video format. I just got a laptop with DVD, and I want to connect it to my TV. THe only video out on the computer is S-Video. I got an adapter and cable from Radio shack and plugged it into the RCA video in of my VCR, thinking that would work. I also use a laser disc with this input, so I know that the problem is not the VCR setting. DO I need to do something special to get the computer to output via the S-Video? Or am I making some other mistake?
