Here's what will happen if you set your speakers to large with a sub...1) In pro logic mode you will get little output from your subwoofer, the receiver is then directing all the low bass to the fronts. You could try setting the fronts to large and the center to small, that may help somewhat.
2) In DTS or 5.1 it will work fine, these formats have a dedicated LFE track that will play out the sub no matter your settings.
Full range front speakers are not necessary in this day and age if you have a subwoofer.
