DSS HDTV - which box, which format?

Like a previous poster, I am an vinyl audio guy who's not into home theater, but wants the best picture possible for TV and movies.
The question is, which source? I am told Dish network has the most HDTV, though Direct TV also has it. I'm also told that the HD format is about to change? Does this mean that all boxes bought now are to be obsolete in no time?
I live in Northern California, if that matters. Could someone share some thoughts on the best equipment investment right now - for picture quality and quantity of HD programming?
Oh, and I need my local channels.
