helping friend w/ new HT

134.67.6.44

A friend is setting up a HT, w/ a new DVD player, new Sony A/V receiver (DE-STR885) and existing Infinity speakers.

She can't get a test tone from her powered sub during calibration, and doesn't think she hears anything while playing a DVD.

She's setting front speakers = large, Sub = YES, accepting standard x-over on reciever (120 hz), and is using the LFE connection to her sub via a y-connector (her sub's only line-level input is an RCA stereo pair, so she splits the mono cable into two at the subwoofer to connect).

I went through her owner's manual for both sub and receiver, gave her suggestions (including cranking the sub's x-over knob to the right, 200 Hz, to get it out of the way), setting speakers to small and back to large, other stuff to somehow 'activate' the LFE output.

Any other suggested items to troubleshoot?

Thanks. Yes, I did some searching around but couldn't find a "dead" subwoofer Q and A.
