Report and Questions re: 2 Sub Home Theater Set Up

68.67.144.35

I got a second sub for my HT system, set it up yesterday, and here's a prelim report and some questions.

System - Onkyo TXDS 797 THX receiver, Denon PMA500V 85 wpc amp for back surround speakers, Toshiba SD9200 DVDA (out for repair) - Front main speakers - Michaura M665 towers, center - Merak MC6H (2x6.5" drivers 7"x3" horn tweeter), side surround speakers - Michaura M55s, back surround speakers - Mission 77ds dipoles. Subs - Klipsch LF10 and Velodyne CHT10.

Sub set up - LF10 positioned to the left of front left M665 in left front corner. CHT10 positioned in 3 o'clock position in front of right side surround M55 speaker.

Connections - The Onkyo 797 has only a single RCA output for subwoofer pre-out. I connected a splitter cable to the Onkyo output and ran two lines to the Line Level In RCA jacks of the Klipsch LF10. I then ran two lines from the RCA line out jacks in the Klipsch to the Line in jacks of the Velodyne.

Settings -

Klipsch - I enabled the +3dB toggle, although the manual is silent about it and I don't know what it means. The Low Pass Filter has settings from 40Hz-120Hz. I set it at 70Hz, don't know what it really does. There is a toggle labeled Line Out with a choice of 50Hz or 100Hz. I set it to 100Hz. There is an LFE-in RCA port but I do not have a dedicated LFE out from the Onkyo. The Onkyo does have a subwoofer LFE volume setting option in its set up menu.

Velodyne - Low Pass Cross Over range is 40Hz-120Hz, I've set it at 120Hz, There is a toggle for "internal cross over" or "direct" I've set it at "direct."

Sound - I played with the volume controls on the 2 subs, couldn't put in a DVD because my Toshiba is in the shop, so listened to Atmospheres new age space music from Adelphia digital cable. Onkyo set to All Channel Stereo back surround speakers enabled.

First impression - I could not locate the position of the subs by listening, but each of the speakers, including the back surround Mission dipoles sounded full range and big. The bass output does overshadow the mids and highs, so I will play with the volume controls some more.

Looking forward to getting the DVD player back so I can test it out with a movie. I think I'll give the Matrix a first try.

Will report back if anyone is interested.

If any of you have any thoughts or suggestions about the settings/hook-up choices I've made, please share !!

Thanks.
