Cleaning a Harman Kardon 730

I recently came into posession of this unit. It sounds good but the controls are quite "scratchy." Also, pushing either of the tape monitor switches causes the right channel to go out - but I can get it back after several minutes of tapping... pressing... tapping... The tuning knob has a bit of a trick to it as well.
I'm inexperienced with electronics (the insides anyway), but I think I could clean a few controls... couldn't I? Should I take it to someone who knows what they're doing to have it cleaned? How do I clean it, anyway?
