yamaha receiver question

I was looking at Yamaha receivers the other day, and I noticed that they do not have balance control on the front panel. Is there a way to control the balance with a menu? Or is this just not available.
Also, can the optical digital input be mapped directly to the 'CD' selector?
I am looking at the 5450,5550,5460 models. Any comments about these, or recomendations for other receivers that I should consider? I am looking in the $300 range.
