Help with VCR multi-system tuning.

I am having problems setting up a home theater system and REALLY need help.
My job takes me to many different countries which means that AV equipment gets bought, over time, in different places. Currently I can't get my VCR to tune TV programmes.

Equipment is a Sony KV-28FX60B television, connected to Sony SLV-E1000 VCR. Both were bought in the Netherlands about three years ago.
(Both are multi-system)

I am currently living in Beijing, China. TV is provided by a local cable company. When linking the TV directly to the aerial (RF aerial) sound and picture are perfect. But if I try to tune the aerial through the VCR, I get picture but the sound is just a hiss.

The TV has RF connector and three SCART/EURO-21 connectors.
The VCR has a single SCART connection and the usual Line Out connections (sorry I don't know the technical name...composite?)

Why can't I tune the VCR into the TV channels? Is this something to do with RF modulation? Or is it to do with the connectors (I actually have a cable which is SCART at the TV end and composite at the VCR line out?)

This problem became apparent when trying to get the TV into a home theater set-up. I bought a Marantz SR6200 AV receiver, and video tapes play back fantastic.

Anyway, my attempts to discuss this with Sony have failed (their China call center people don't speak English - unsurprisingly - and I can barely discuss this technical issue in English, let alone Chinese).

Can anyone help?
