recording analog video to dvd or vcd

I am thinking of converting some of my old recorded video tapes unto CD for storage and then play them later in either vcd or dvd. I am not sure if I could do this myself. I have a cd-recording drive in my computer, but I am not sure how this will work. I will most likely need some type of software or hardware to convert analog to digital. Please advise.
