Laptop as monitor for DVD...

I have s-video connections on my DVD player and laptop and I am trying to figure out how I can use the laptop to view the menu on my DVD player. The laptop has a DVD drive in it and I am sure the s-video connection is set up to send a DVD signal out to a TV but what about using it to recieve a signal from a DVD player? Sorry, it might be a simple thing but I can't find any way to set up the laptop as a monitor. I could do this with my older laptop using the video analogue connections but can't seem to figure out the new technology. Anyone able to help a technodweeb?? Thanks,
