'offbrands' for rear projection... how good are some of the less well-established rptvs?

like LG or Optoma? samsung and a couple others, seem to be the main market share for dlp rptvs these days, but LG and Optoma, at least, are showing up more and more and undercutting the price of samsung, using the same chips, from what i can tell.

are these two brands reliable or at least worth considering? or are they the 'yorx' or 'emerson' of the current tv world? i think LG is a korean company that came from 'litton' and 'goldstar' - no? goldstar was always a good example of the low-end line of electronics at k-mart in the old days, but then, the korean cars have gotten a lot of respect recently for being good values, and they used to get the bad rap for low end junk.
