MINI REVIEW: Marantz AV560...

I recently bought a used Marantz av560 pre-processor. This unit contains a tuner as well as video switching. Comes with a complex, but complete remote. It replaces an old Technics SH500AD processor.

First off, the Marantz sounds much cleaner than the Technics (not surprising given the relative cost of each new!) and center channel dialogue is much easier to follow. The tuner is of reasonable quality with multiple presets. So on that front, I am quite pleased with the improvement.

Down sides include: remote while complete, is not "intuitive" and requires much reading to sort out all the functions. Given the age of remote, it lacks the ability to download codes from the internet. In terms of sound as compared to pure two channel preamp, the Marantz is a bit "hifi" sounding...lacks both the depth and warmth of good two channel preamp.

All that said, on the used market, it is a good processor for the money.
