Video editing: AVI to DVD VOB format loss quality ?

I am new to video editing. I do know that when someone converts a CD wav file to mp3 then back to wav, significant quality is loss. I am not too sure about converting video *.avi files to the DVD format, ie, from *.avi to *.vob files (upstream converting). I do know that the *.vob format takes more room to store vs the *.avi format for the same content, just as the *.wav format takes more more to store than the *.mp3 format.

Also, what software do you use? I use:

Roxio
Cucusoft
Nero
