Probably a used piece will give you the best bang for the buck. If you can find a product line that you like, take a look at www.audioreview.com for older models that might be candidates. Then the shopping begins. The drawback, of course, is that it's tough to listen used equipment in advance of the purchase. Perhaps your friends or a local A/V dealer can steer you to good values in used equipment.
