. . . to block excessive solar radiation, was apparently first proposed back in the 1970s, IIRC. Magnesium oxide was considered a likely candidate, because it was of low toxicity, and light enough to remain airborne for a long while.

Some chemtrail enthusiasts believe this technology has actually been operational for decades.
