You (and the garbage Guardian!) cynically claim that it is. And yet at the same time, I would bet money that you're fine (and the Guardian is fine!) with Kosovo breaking away (with lots of US weapons and money) from Serbia. So which is it? Can territories break away from their mother countries? Apparently it's OK for Kosovo (after all, that territory had our blessing to break away!) - not so much for South Ossetia.
Remember: the OSCE found that Russia acted properly with respect to South Ossetia and Georgia - no matter what sort of teary-eyed human interest story the Guardian tried to peddle seven years later.
