That's how it was for us too (engineering) in the same period. And lots of full ashtrays at the end of a day, though IIRC most didn't smoke as it was more common for women to do it at that time (not so many women in engineering then). People who complained about smokers were considered trouble-makers and largely ostracised as "no fun". Didn't treat women at all like in MM though, that is a significant difference by 1980.

Anyway the thread inspired me to watch the MM S1 BD again, been more than a year. Another big diff I noticed from then and now is the way children were treated (I was about the age of Draper's son at that time). At least compared to in these parts. Watch the birthday party episode, possibly the most intentionally blatant "this was then" episode of the whole series. Tons of things that would have a 30-year-old mother aghast.
