Whether you can see the difference between a 720p and 1080p display is a fuction of screen size and viewing distance, assuming everything else is relatively equal. With screen sizes less than or equal to 42" you would need to sit 6 feet or less away to see any differences in resolution. So unless you enjoy sitting that close save some money and get a 720p display. I would also recommend that you take another look at Plasma displays before going with an LCD especially if you like the picture on your CRT, they're very similar. Plasmas have better contrast ratios, deeper blacks, no blurring or motion problems and a wide viewing angle. Only the much more expensive LED based LCDs can compete and their viewing angle is still terrible.
