...I just settled on a Toshiba XD-E500KU upconverting 1080p DVD player (to use with a Sony XBR5 LCD HDTV) until that grand poobah.
After getting a good one (some were soft, or flakey with sync), I'm a happy watcher. With HDMI it works to sharpen , color and contrast enhance. Does a nice job of making standard DVDs look like cinema. I only use it for DVDs.
It can be had ~$100 on sale at big box stores.
Very slick black with "XDE" logo (that can be turned off).
