7.1 Receiver Question

I have a 5.1 speaker system and, because of room layout, can't go to a 7.1 system. Is it OK to use a 7.1 receiver for the system? The 5.1 receivers available today seem to be at the bottom of the manufacturer's food chain and don't offer the features I want. Thanks.
