He's got a relatively small, but important role in Merci. I have not seen My Night, sounds interesting.Calling him best actor - I would hesitate (that is an awfully tall tytle with many fine contenders), although he is an excellent all around (who could forget the COnformist?). And I don't know what stped him from being popular here - and perhaps that is his blessing.
With 123 films to his credit he would have something for everyone, it seems.
Maybe it's his looks? America doesn't like those who are what it calls "dogs" (remember Marty? What a fart of an Oscar!), so only few exceptions are allowed - Depardieu may be one such case. But people like Fernandel or Belmondo cound not make it here... I guess. And they never did, even though it is hard to find a more insigtful actor than Fernandel. Or Michel Simon - another "dog". If you have not seen L'Atalante you must, must, must.
Problem is - most of those guys are so outside of the American main stream that even my store has only very few films with them - and I do speak highly of that store. I'll see if they have My Night - sounds like a film my wife might enjoy - she wasn't crazy about Merci.
