I agree SW is not a movie, it is really just a video game extension. It is sad that today something like that passes for "movie" and creates such a stir. I also fully expect it to get plenty of Oscar nominations.
Portman's role... there is no role, really, nothing to play, so she is simply there. She has not yet demonstrated big acting talent - forget for the moment her debut in the Professional, where she was absolutely smashing, but one role does not an actor make, and now she has to work with skill where child's undeniable charm worked before. That may be tougher.
I don't quite share your pessimism that we have lost the pleasure of movie art. There are still many people who create it, it is the audience demand that has disappeared. Under the relentless pressure from the Hollywood juggernaut perhaps? Who knows... but the bottom line is when a good film is in town very few go to see it.
Good actors and directors will continue making fine films, because that is what they are put on Earth to do, but the real question is whether we will be able to see them, or they will only exist in some parallel universe? If it takes special effort to find them, you may pretty much assume that they will be found less and less frequently and some day will go the way of the steamers.
When clark retires from writing, who will tell us about the Wicker Man? BTW - he was there too, "enjoying" the SW... he-he... While my excuse for not leaving was Natalie, his was - sitting in the middle of the row... nice and delicate man that he is, he didn't want to disturb those around him. Kind he is.
Anyway, at least I didn't pay to see that "marvel". In fact, everyone was given boxes of candies, free popcorn and soda, and even t-shirts. So in reality I was given $20 just to come and enjoy it.
