No question: 'Don't Ask' is a sassy schlock riot
By Erin Meister, Globe Correspondent, 7/12/2002Part ''Godzilla,'' part ''Mystery Science Theater 3000,'' and part pure schlock, the refried film ''Don't Ask Don't Tell'' recycles the cult-classic horror flick ''Killers From Space'' by dubbing in new dialogue and an outrageously offensive and hilarious plot.
Hardly anyone remembers what the original film was about, although it did feature a young Peter Graves (who went on to a certain kind of fame in the original ''Mission: Impossible'') and was directed by the legendary Billy Wilder's less-than-memorable younger brother, W. Lee Wilder.
No matter. Writer Tex Hauser and director Doug Miles weave a new story around an elaborate military plot to wipe out hundreds of thousands of gays lured to Sodom Flats, Texas, with the promise of a free Barbra Streisand concert. The sinister plan to straighten up the country is foiled by - you guessed it - gay aliens sent to Earth to ''reverse the sexual polarity of all animals on the planet.''
Obviously, the original special effects aren't the major draw to the film; were that the case, ''Killers From Space'' wouldn't have been a ''lost classic'' in the first place. Instead, punchy new dialogue, edgy satirical jabs, and superfluous use of the word ''fabulous'' make ''Don't Ask'' a surprisingly thoughtful social film. Oh, and not to mention, an incredibly funny one.
Added bonuses to the revamped clunker include the lead alien's unmistakable Truman Capote lisp, the blink-and-you-miss-them sassy pop-culture references, and the snappy dialogue, which includes a reference to the aliens needing more ''gay rays'' than are at ''a `Will and Grace' party at Smith College.''
