Aguirre - Wrath of God Question

I was wondering if anyone knows what kind of animal Aguirre holds up to his daughter about 1/3 way through the movie? He shows it to her and makes a comment - something like it sleeps most of its life. Is it a Sloth? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
