Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

12.83.76.208

Saw this one in the theater when it first came out... I remember being impressed with the "city of Peking" shot and some of the swordplay in the trees... was not too keen on the "wire-fu" bits or the entire sequence where Jen Yu rides off after the bandit only to fall in love with him... pretty much felt that the movie was overlong and over-rated.

Picked up the DVD on a whim and watched it last night... all I can say is WOW... I seriously underestimated this film *and* this is one gorgeous-looking DVD. The print I saw in the theater was extremely blue... the color timing must have been off... the colors in the DVD are wonderfully warm with natural skin tones. Every scene is composed as beautifully as a still photo... the story plays out so much better on the small screen, it seems much more intimate for some reason... odd as I usually have a much stronger emotional response to film. The Cantonese soundtrack is not quite as clean or dynamic as the English track but it is essential to experience the film in Chinese language... the music is terrific and I bypassed the 5.1 surround in favor of plain stereo, albeit with tube amplification... wonderful music... a fantastic movie which I am looking forward to seeing again soon.
