Re: Jackie Gleason Docu-drama tonight

I watched it. Garrett was okay. Of course, he doesn't look at all like Gleason and is not nearly as capable a physical comic as the Great One was, but he did pretty well.

Gleason was one of a kind - like Babe Ruth, Jack Benny, Bogart, James Cagney, Lucille Ball, and a few others. No one could possibly do him justice as long as there are still people around who remember his glory days. I would have preferred a good documentary on his life. Still, one gets a small idea of what made Gleason so great (and it wasn't his girth) by watching the tv movie.

Just watch a few episodes of "The Honeymooners" or, if you can find it, "The American Scene Magazine." Gleason, Carney, Randolph, Audrey Meadows, Pert Kelton. With a cast like that, how could it miss? Even now, 50 years after its debut, and despite repeated viewings, "The Honeymooners" holds up. It is certainly one of the true gems of tv's "Golden Age" and funnier than much of what passes for comedy today.
