i happened into the video store last night to return my copy of 'sum of all fears', a same day return!, and the owner had just gotten a bunch of used dvd's. i spotted 'existenz' and bought it from him for ten bucks.i wanted to see this movie again and it was great to see it on dvd versus vhs. i like the film on dvd.
i realized it's kind of an unpleasant film, like a bad trip, or as the movie might say, a bad game experience. it's a science fiction movie, but it can almost be a psychological horror film.
the sets in the film are well done. the director seems to pay great attention to detail. and there's a kind of care about the quality of the shots. it does not look like it was an expensive film to make.
the film has a sound starkness to it. it's generally stark, but especially so in the sound. i ;like this effect.
the film keeps you wondering how the director is going to move forward with the film from 'a' to 'b'. the whole film is completely original it seems, and you really have no idea what is going to happen next. it's all new terrain.
it's a great idea, the idea of gaming, cause the director can move into any scene he wants to create. he has complete freedom. not every film goer is going to want to go for this ride however.
there's a lot of gore, alot of blood. the movie really has a macabre character to it.
i'm a little addicted to the movie like the characters are to gaming. it's a hell of a world, not the most pleasant, but i feel compelled to go.
i think this film opns up possibilities of thought. it makes you realize that hollywood tries to close up possibilities. this is the most interesting thing i found about this film.
i wonder what else this director did.
