This is what I usually say too. And there are some good westerns too... however, I can't think of any *great* one.This is not a damnation of the genre, just the statement of the fact that no great director has ever made a great film of that kind.
At least I can't think of any. The Unforgiven is a good film, but not much more than that.
Like it or not, the original question mentioned Federico - and that puts the plank HIGH.
When you think Fellini you are in the masterpiece territory, and the entrance fee is steep.
