The man you are referring to is Harold Russell, who indeed played in "The Best Years of Our Lives" in 1946 and won 2 Oscars for that performance, as Best Supporting Actor and a Special Oscar for his performance. He lost both hands to an explosives accident during WWII. Harold Russell was featured in 3 movies, the one listed above, Inside Moves in 1980 & Dogtown in 1997. He died this year at the age of 88 on Jan. 29,2002.
