directed by Takashi MiikeTechnically 2001 (Japan) but it had a very limited theatrical run on our shores in 2002 (most likely not outside the arthouse circuit).
It isn't yet available on video although I believe the rights have been picked up for US distribution. I picked up the Hong Kong disc which I later discovered is cut by 13 mins, unfortunately.
The premise is simple enough. Yakuza gang on the prowl for killer who's done away with their boss.
One word of caution. This is not for the squeamish or faint of heart. If you are easily offended, there's a good chance this isn't your cup of tea. Due to the graphic nature of this film, it's easy to see why some people might brush this off as nothing more than senseless violence for the sake of shock value.
With that being said, 'Ichi' is a fun and wild ride. I'm somewhat new to the world of Takashi Miike. I had seen 'Fudoh: The Next Generation' (which made me an instant fan) and 'Audition' prior to Ichi so I was semi-prepared for the intense mayhem (not really). It was like A Clockwork Orange all over again (not really).
Well that's quite a bit of hype and I haven't really said much about this movie. Check the link for the trailer.
