Poolhall Junkies, personal review

68.104.2.103

I have been an avid pool player and fan for approx. 40 years (has it been that long ??!!!) and was quite interested in this latest "pool movie", as the release of the movie had been delayed several times for some reason. The actors are quite good, Christopher Walken & Chazz Palmenterri (sp.?) did their usual outstanding job & Clint Eastwood's daughter is also in it as well as Rick Schroeder (didn't he used to be little Ricky ??). The film has drama and humor and was, I believe, Rod Steiger's last film role.

Now to the serious pool criticism:

Top players do not jack the back of their cues up for virtually every shot, they do not use an open bridge for every shot, they do not shoot bank shot after bank shot (especially if they are playing for $10,000 per set. Top players do not break from the middle of the table. After a pro player shoots the cue does NOT fly up into the air. They don't play a race to 5 in 9-ball for $10,000, they usually play to 11 or 15 for this amount. In the big final match they used 2 different sets of ball for the filming, a cheap set and a set of Brunswick Centennial balls which are optically quite different. It is a shame that they did not have a consultant on this film that could have made sure they didn't include all of these errors.

All in all it is an enjoyable film and I would recommend it to anyone that is or is not a big pool fan.
